A magistrate in Sri Lanka has ordered an 18-year-old unmarried woman to be put in remand custody for throwing away her newborn baby in a paddy field, the ‘Lankadeepa’ reported.

Local people found a crying baby in the paddy field and handed it over to a hospital in Panadura for treatment.

After local people informed them, the police identified a maidservant of a nearby house as the infant’s mother.

After arresting the woman, police admitted her to hospital because she was not in good health.

The woman told police she had delivered the baby in the toilet.

Teacher arrested for raping underage girl

A male teacher has been arrested and released on bail for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in a religious school in Sri Lanka.

The judge also ordered the 50-year-old suspect to report at the Beruwala police station every Saturday.

Police Sergeant Jayantha said the suspect had sexually abused the underage girl while she was in religious school uniform.

The defence lawyer argued that the suspect had been a religious school teacher for 18 years and therefore should be released on bail.
