Mother sells daughter, 14, to rich businessmen

Police have arrested a mother for selling her underage daughter to rich businessmen for sex, Sri Lanka media reported.

The police unit of the Women’s and Child Bureau of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has started investigations into an incident where a mother from Kottawa area sold her 14-year-old daughter to wealthy businessmen who arrive in luxury vehicles, ‘Mawbima’ reported.

According the unit’s Director SSP Padmalal Sandungahawatta, investigations revealed that not only the daughter, the woman had also offered herself for sex for a sum ranging from Rs60,000 to Rs90,000 per day.

After mother refused to give money to the daughter, the girl left her after an argument and proceeded to stay with the grandma.

It has also been discovered that the money earned selling the daughter was credited to a bank account.

On a tip-off received by the unit, the police had taken the girl into their custody and kept her at a children’s home and produced her for a medical examination.

The 35-year-old mother is absconding as she escaped arrest. A special police team has been deployed to arrest her.
