Rs2.65m in smuggled gold… Cops fine of just Rs25,000

Customs at Banadaranaike International Airport on thwarted an attempt by a Sri Lankan to smuggle out two gold slabs worth Rs2.65 million to India.

Customs spokesman Leslie Gamini told ‘The Island’ that the smuggler (24) from Jaffna had been waiting to board UL 172 flight scheduled to take off to Bangalore around 6.45 pm.

Customs officers grew suspicious as the passenger was writhing in pain.

The Customs Spokesman said that the contraband was forfeited and the smuggler released after being fine Rs25,000.
