SRI LANKA: A teacher at a school in Aralaganwila allegedly hit a student so hard that his ear drum got damaged and cracked open. The boy was brutally punished by the teacher for getting his snack on a polythene packet. At the time the incident occurred, the boy was having his lunch.

Wilyaya Central College has banned students from bringing polythene to school to prevent environmental pollution. However, the teachers had not been authorised to punish students, Sukith Ranasinghe, the school Principal told the media.

The victim, Nimantha Dilshan Seneviratne, had to be admitted in a hospital with a burst ear drum.

The Principal said he had learnt that the teacher had assaulted a Grade 11 student, but he was not aware that it had caused the student’s ear drum to burst.

An officer at the Aralaganwila police station said they had recorded the statement of the teacher who had allegedly assaulted Nimantha and they were in the process of taking legal action against him.
