Youth sells brother's kids for money

A young man along with two women suspects have been arrested in Sri Lanka on suspicion of selling his elder brother’s two children for money, the ‘Divaina’ newspaper reported.

Police said that the suspect, himself a father of two children, had sold a two-year-old male child for Rs. 5,000 and a four-year-old child for Rs25,000.

One child had been taken found by the police and search is on to find the other child.

Police Constable Jayawardena of Gampola police had received a tip-off that a person from Beragala Estate in Rassawa, Dolos Bage, was making arrangements to sell a child. So he went to the estate with a policewoman, posing as a married couple,

A deal was struck  at a Gampola rest house for Rs25,000 after which the suspect was arrested.

Investigations revealed that after the death of the children’s mother, the father had left them with his younger brother who had earlier said that both their parents were dead but later it was found that the children’s father was alive.

Police are also investigating about an elder brother and an older sister of the two children, who were supposed to be under probationary care.
