Medium to heavy rain has been reported in several parts of the UAE today following low pressure over the Gulf of Oman.
Umm Al Quwain received the maximum rainfall with 17mm of recorded until 4pm, said an official at the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS). In Fujairah about 12.5mm rainfall was recorded.
“In Sharjah it was minimal with just 0.4 per cent and in Dubai there was just traces of rain,” said a NCMS forecaster.
Residents in Ajman said they had also witnessed hailstorms.
According to NCMS the weather will continue to remain the same for some time to come but should ease within the next 24 hours.“All emirates except Abu Dhabi and Al Ain received heavy to medium rainfall today. The main reason for the rain is the development of the low pressure over the Gulf of Oman. It first affected the Eastern areas of the country before moving on to the Western side,” said the official.
“Fujairah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain especially received some heavy downpour. The weather will continue to remain cloudy during the evening with some more rain expected over these areas,” he added.
According to him although the weather will remain cloudy during the next 24 hours, the intensity of the rain would reduce. “You can expect some towering clouds and showers over the mountain areas in eastern areas,” he said.
According to the weather bulletin the minimum temperature along the coastal areas would remain at around 20 degrees celcius and a maximum of 31 degrees.
“There would be slight to moderate winds in general, freshening at times causing blowing dust sand over some openland areas, reducing horizontal visibility at times. Sea will be moderate in general, becoming rough at times,” it warned.
