The man behind last week's twin attacks in Norway in which 76 people died, Anders Behring Breivik, expected to be killed by angry Norwegians as he entered the courtroom Monday, his lawyer Geir Lippestad said.

"He said several times that he expected to be shot dead," on his way to the courtroom where he made his first appearance behind closed doors, Lippestad told NRK television channel.

A crowd of angry Norwegians hurled abuse at Behring Breivik as he arrived at court, calling him "traitor" and "bloody killer".

"He expected it," Lippestad said.

"He has a completely different perception of reality than us other Norwegians, for instance he thinks that torture exists in prisons in Norway."

The judge remanded the man behind the shooting and bombing attack into custody for eight weeks, four of them in solitary confinement.

"He's not surprised, he took things calmly," said Lippestad.
