A new system of automated baggage drop-off that will enable airline passengers to check in their baggage in only 30 seconds, is being tested at Orly Airport in Paris.

“This service offers airlines a system that enables smooth flow of the baggage drop-off step and also satisfies passengers who have been asking to be increasingly self-reliant,” says François Rubichon, deputy CEO of Aéroports de Paris.

In the new system, developed by Aeroports de Paris, passengers first proceed to a self-serve kiosk to print their boarding pass, if they have not got one already. Nowadays, more and more passengers do their check-in on line from home.

Passengers then go to the automated baggage area, scan their boarding card and place their baggage in the machine. Name of owner and weight of baggage are verified and transmitted to airline. Lastly, a 'baggage receipt' is automatically delivered to passengers. A machine-integrated secure sliding door guarantees against inclusion of banned items in the baggage. In 30 seconds, the bag is checked in and automatically re-routed to a traditional circuit where it is inspected and secured before getting to its final destination: the aircraft hold.
