Rivers of mud surging down mountainsides from heavy rain have killed at least 112 people in India's Kashmir region and injured another 400.
The death toll was raised overnight by state police chief Kuldeep Khoda after the discovery of nine bodies in the debris of collapsed homes in the remote region of Ladakh.
A thunderstorm triggered floods and mudslides in many places Friday, burying houses and toppling power and telecommunication towers, said Khoda.
Nearly 2,000 foreign tourists were in Ladakh, a popular destination for adventure sports enthusiasts.
An army spokesman said 100 foreign tourists, mostly Europeans, have been rescued, and India's External Affairs Ministry said some foreign nationals were caught up in the floods.
