Egypt building collapse kills 13

At least 13 Egyptians died and nearly two dozen were injured on Saturday when a building collapsed in the southern Egyptian tourist town of Luxor, security officials said.

They said the toll could rise further as rescue workers were still digging through the rubble of the six-storey building, which appeared to have collapsed as a result of construction work around its ground floor support walls.

At least 23 people were injured in the incident, with several taken to the local hospital, the officials said.

Such accidents are relatively frequent in Egypt, where construction guidelines are regularly flouted and extra floors are often added to buildings without planning permission.
