Islamic scholars move to ban 'triple talaq'

Triple talaq in one sitting - the process of divorce by which the man says "talaq" thrice, and polygamy, will soon be banned in India if Parliament amends the Muslim Personal Law as per the revolutionary draft suggested by the National Consultation on Codification.

The draft also makes registration of Muslim marriages with the state governments mandatory and minimum age of bride will be made 18 and that for boys 21.

"Codification of the personal law is the need of the hour. We are not bringing any new law but only reiterating the provisions which the Quran makes for Muslim men and women," reformist scholar Asghar Ali Engineer was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Polygamy is restrictive, said the group comprsing Muslim scholars and activists. Similarly, there is no place for triple talaq in one sitting, said Qutub Jehan Kidwai of the Institute of Islamic Studies.

The Quranic verses, while allowing men to take up to four wives, clearly says that men cannot do justice to all of them and, therefore, should marry just one woman," said Justice Shamsuddin.
