Medical student kills self over Orkut love

A medical student who thought his Orkut friend had ditched him committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel in northeast India.
The student, Rupak Nath, apparently took his life leaving tell-tale signs that he was depressed with life as he thought the girl had left him, Times of India reported.
While the boy was a student of Agartala Government Medical College the girl, originally from Kolkata, studies in southern India and the two had never met. He medical doctor father works in Agartala and the young couple had met over internet.
The incident came to light when the girl Rima (not her real name) failed to get answer when she called the boy. She then alerted his friends who forced open his hostel room’s door and found him hanging from the ceiling fan.
In his Orkut scrapbook, a feature that allows to post any tidbits, he had written Rima didn’t want to see his face. He then repeated “unlucky Rupak, hopeless Rupak.” His last message was addressed to the girl’s father.
The newspaper quoted his friends as saying Nath did display extreme behavior and carried “hesitation marks” – a term that refers to marks left by slashes on wrists and forearms usually after suicide attempts of display of such tendencies.
In what is seen as an irony, the boy didn’t take his girlfriend’s profile statement which says: “Strength is Life and Weakness is Death.”
