Ninth death following Sydney nursing home fire
A 90-year-old woman became the ninth person to die Tuesday after a horrific fire at a Sydney nursing home over which a carer has been charged with multiple counts of murder.
Neeltje Valkay died in hospital early Tuesday, police said, the latest victim of last week's Quakers Hill Nursing Home inferno, which also injured dozens of elderly and infirm residents, several of whom remain in a critical condition.
Roger Dean, 35, a nurse at the home who was initially hailed as a hero for helping in the rescue, has been charged with four counts of murder over the blaze.
He is expected to face further charges when he appears in court on Thursday, according to police.
Three people died at the scene on Friday and another six have since perished in hospital. Their ages range from 73 to 97, and all but two have now been identified.
Police said forensic investigations were continuing at the now-gutted home, which had been unsafe to enter for a number of days, with the help of the murder and theft squads.
New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell has ordered a review of criminal screening of staff at all of the state's nursing homes and an audit of buildings at care facilities for the elderly in the wake of the tragedy.
A memorial service will be held for the victims on Wednesday at Quakers Hill Anglican Church.
