Libya's new regime fighters on Tuesday seized the police headquarters in the centre of Sirte, one of the last bastions of support for ousted strongman Moamer Kadhafi, an AFP reporter said.

Fighters of the National Transitional Council (NTC) celebrated the takeover of the strategic security centre by cheering, honking the horns of their vehicles and firing into the air.

Unlike in the past four days, the NTC forces met no resistance from Kadhafi diehards as they advanced into the city centre, where they found the police headquarters deserted.

The NTC fighters had besieged Sirte from September 15 before on Friday launching what they termed a "final assault" that has seen at least 70 of their fighters killed and hundreds wounded, according to medics.
