France's ambassador to Mali has had a reassuring phone conversation with President Amadou Toumani Toure, whose fate had been unclear since being ousted by renegade soldiers last week.

Christian Rouyer "was able to speak on the phone to president ATT, who reassured him over his fate," French foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero told AFP.
