Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Prithviraj Chavan was Wednesday named leader of Congress legislative party, paving the way for him to become the next chief minister of Maharashtra.

The announcement was made in New Delhi by the country's finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, a day after Ashok Chavan resigned as Maharashtra chief minister.

Ashok Chavan on Tuesday resigned as Maharashtra Chief Minister following a directive from Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in the wake of the Adarsh Housing Society scam.

The 51-year-old Chavan had on October 30 offered to resign during a meeting with Gandhi after it emerged that three of his relatives were members of the housing society in upmarket Colaba in Mumbai.
