Protest in Spain after Senegal man shot dead

About 200 mainly African immigrants marched in Barcelona Wednesday to protest the fatal shooting of a Senegalese man which led Spanish police to arrest four members of a Roma family.

The march, under the watch of dozens of riot police, began and ended on the street in the multiethnic neighbourhood of San Marti where the shooting took place on Tuesday, reportedly due to a dispute over a football game.

The protesters held up signs that read "Justice" above a large photo of the victim, identified by Spanish media as 32-year-old Ibrahima Dyey.

After Tuesday's shooting, dozens of protesters broke shop windows and overturned rubbish bins in the neighbourhood, prompting riot police to charge them several times.

The director general of the Catalan police, Manel Prat, told radio Rac1 that there would be a "permanent presence in the area" in coming days.

One of the men arrested had asked a group of youths to stop playing football on the street and after they refused he opened fire on them with a gun, striking Dyey in the chest, according to Spanish media reports.

Dyey was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.
