The UAE has introduced a new prize to be given to a local farmer who owns the country’s tallest palm date tree, a newspaper reported on Monday.

Farmers have been asked to submit applications for the prize which will be announced on July 29 towards the end of the July 22-30 date festival in Liwa, nearly 150km southwest of Abu Dhabi.

"This is a new prize in the UAE. It will be given to the farmer who proves that he owns the tallest palm date tree," the semi-official daily 'Al Ittihad' said, quoting Obaid Al Mazroui, Director, Liwa Date Festival.

The UAE, one of the top date producers in the world, organises the date festival in the oasis town of Liwa every year. Hundreds of local farmers participate in the event, which was first ordered by late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan with the aim of encouraging farmers to grow palm, the main crop in the UAE and other desert Gulf oil producers.
