A group of school children give their fish a Viking funeral after they passed away last month after being bought as a surprise gift from their teacher at Christmas.

Kirkwall's Papdale school in Shetland, Scotland, owned two pet fish, named Freddy and Bubbles, who tragically died last month, and because the class had been learning about the historic era they decided to give the beloved animals a traditional send-off.

The pupils made ships out of cereal boxes and egg cartons, wrote memoirs to the late creatures, before they set their makeshift ships , which carried the deceased bodies, alight and sent them off down a stream to Valhalla.

The students became attached to the goldfish after their teacher, Mrs Corey Eddington, brought them for her class as a surprise at Christmas.

She told The Metro newspaper: "The pupils loved the fish and thought they were so fun. They took turns cleaning the water.

"They believed the fish had their own little personalities too. Freddie was greedy and fat - he would always get to the food pellets first.

"Bubbles was shy. She would hide in the plants. We were gutted the day they died. It was a really sombre day.

"They asked if we could all ride in a big boat behind them - but I think that was a bit ambitious.

"They were so inspired and enthusiastic and made intricately designed boats.

"Now when we ask what Valhalla is, the pupils say 'That's where Freddie and Bubbles are.'"
