Bieber's lock of hair sells on eBay for $40K

A lock of hair from the head of pop star Justin Bieber fetched more than $40,000 in an eBay auction.

Bieber, who had been known for having luscious locks that cascaded across his forehead, famously opted for a shorter coiffure in late February and presented talk show host Ellen DeGeneres with a remnant of his signature hair when he appeared on her show last week.

DeGeneres put the gift up for auction with the proceeds benefiting animal rescue organisation, The Gentle Barn Foundation. The hair fetched $40,668 on eBay.

The Never Say Never star celebrated his 17th birthday Tuesday and used the day to raise money for another non-profit charity: building clean water projects in developing countries.

"Thank u for a great bday and an amazing gift of charity to help others. another year but still the same kid. still grateful," he tweeted to his fans.
 

Spielberg to make WikiLeaks movie

US: Hollywood film mogul Steven Spielberg has bought the rights to the story of the WikiLeaks saga, the UK's Guardian newspaper reports.

The Guardian was one of the five original media outlets used by WikiLeaks founder, Australian Julian Assange, to publicise the tranche of thousands of classified US documents relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and diplomatic cables.

A book based on the story of the covert leaks, and controversial figurehead Assange, has been published by The Guardian, and the rights to the book have now been purchased by Spielberg, the paper reported.

The likely future movie of the book will be made by DreamWorks, the studio founded by Spielberg and others in 1994.
  
 
Beyonce donated Gaddafi money

NEW YORK: Grammy-winning singer Beyonce donated money received for a New Year's Eve concert, reportedly for Libyan tyrant Muammar Gaddafi's son, to help Haiti relief over a year ago, a spokeswoman said.

Beyonce gave the money away as soon as she learned of the Gaddafi connection to the concert at a private party on the Caribbean island of St. Barts on December 31, 2009.

"All monies paid to Beyonce for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year's Eve 2009 ... were donated to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, over a year ago," said spokesperson Yvette Noel-Schure.

"Once it became known that the third party promoter was linked to the [Gaddafi] family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause," she added, saying the donated money included payments to her booking agency.

The New York Post reported in early January 2010 that Beyonce had sung five songs, dressed in a sexy black leotard, at the Caribbean island party thrown by Gaddafi's son Hannibal.
 
Garden hose saves trapped man's life

ROCKHAMPTON: A man caught by rocks in a rapidly rising Queensland creek was given a piece of garden hose to breath through while rescuers fought to free him.

The man became trapped while swimming in the creek at Marlborough, north of Rockhampton, an emergency services spokeswoman said.

"He became submerged and trapped around the waist when rocks shifted,'' she told AAP.

"Heavy rainfall caused the water to rise rapidly,'' she said.

Bystanders who went to his aid on Wednesday evening gave the man a piece of garden hose to breath through, while they used a rope to pull him free.
 
Army dog dies of broken heart after Taliban kill his master

AFGHANISTAN: In life, they were united in their tireless work saving countless British soldiers in Afghanistan.

In death, they were united in tragedy.

Shortly after Lance Corporal Liam Tasker was killed in a firefight with the Taliban, his devoted Army search dog Theo suffered a seizure and passed away too.

The pair had uncovered 14 home-made bombs and hoards of weapons in just five months – a record for a dog and his handler in the conflict, reported Daily Mail.

Tasker, 26, this week became the 358th British serviceman to die in the ten-year conflict.

Only last month he described his joy at the close bond he had developed with Theo, a 22-month-old springer spaniel cross.

‘I love my job and working together with Theo. He has a great character and never tires,’ he said in an interview on the Ministry of Defence website.

‘He can’t wait to get out and do his job and will stop at nothing.’

Theo and Tasker, an Arms and Explosives Search dog handler of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, 1st Military Working Dog Regiment, were part of the Theatre Military Working Dogs Support Unit based at Camp Bastion.
