Philippines catches fake nuns going to Lebanon

Six women were detained at Manila airport after being caught trying to sneak into Lebanon dressed as nuns in a bid to get around a travel ban to the country, the immigration bureau said on Saturday.

The women were pretending to be on their way to Hong Kong for a religious seminar but their unusual dress and behaviour alerted officials, the bureau.Under questioning they eventually admitted they were actually on their way to Lebanon to work as domestic helpers.

The Philippines has banned people from going to Lebanon to work as helpers since 2007 due to the security situation and inadequate legal protection for its labourers there.

"Their appearance aroused our suspicion especially after we noticed that one of them had red shoes, a colourful handbag and wore her nun's costume improperly," airport immigration officer Joel Valencia said in a statement.

Investigators are now trying to locate the man who illegally recruited them for work in Lebanon, the bureau said.

Despite the travel ban on workers, many Filipinos have gone illegally gone to work in Lebanon, circumventing the restrictions by travelling through third countries.

'Nightclub fired us for being too short'

NEW YORK: Women sue a New York nightclub The Boom Boom Room claiming they were fired for being too short.

Two aspiring actresses have filed a $500,000 lawsuit against a New York nightclub saying they were fired as cocktail waitresses for being too short, myFOXny.com reported.

Stephanie Jaggers, 27, and Faye Rex, 24, allege gender discrimination against The Boom Boom Room because the height requirement was only for women.

The Boom Boom Room is located on top of the Standard Hotel in the trendy Meatpacking District. It has been called the new Studio 54 as it attracts celebrities such as Madonna, Lindsay Lohan and Jude Law.

The lawsuit alleges that after the club renovated last summer, the Standard Hotel management hired women who "appear to be willowy, svelte and statuesque runway models."

The nightclub then fired Jaggers - who is 5ft 3in (160cm) - and Rex - who is 5ft 4in (162.5cm) - allegedly saying they were not up to par.

The Standard Hotel owners refused to comment on the lawsuits, a spokeswoman said.

Soldier proposes to the wrong woman

(AGENCIES)

A mother of three is looking for Samantha, the girlfriend of a soldier stationed in Afghanistan, who left an emotional marriage proposal on her answering machine by mistake.

It was a simple case of wrong number, the 44-year-old alternative therapist told The Sun.

Diana is now desperate to discover who Samantha is so she can pass on the message.

The mystery squaddie, who didn't give his name, told his pregnant sweetheart: "I love you so much" and asked: "Will you marry me?", the daily quoted.

Diana discovered it on her machine when she returned from work. She reckons the lovelorn boy is from nearby Sunderland and that his girlfriend's number must be similar to hers.

She was quoted by the daily as saying, "He sounded really young, only about 18. He said he would not be able to ring for another month, and that he wouldn't be home for another three months."

500,000 adults have NEVER worked in UK

(REUTERS)

The number of homes where no one has ever done a day’s work almost doubled during Labour’s years in power.

By the time Gordon Brown left Downing Street, around 552,000 adults and a quarter of a million children were sharing such homes, official figures have revealed, Daily Mail reported.

The majority are not looking for work and, according to the survey by the Office for National Statistics, ‘would not like to work’.

It found that there are 352,000 households where no one has ever worked. Almost one in three of these is occupied by students in full-time education who have no experience of part-time or holiday jobs.

But 269,000 homes are occupied by adults who do nothing and have never done anything to support themselves, the ONS said. The figure is just under double the 136,000 homes where the occupants had never worked recorded in Tony Blair’s election victory year of 1997.

Here comes the man-bride

(AGENCIES)

PARIS: Melbourne male model Andrej Pejic has walked the catwalk dressed as a bride for designer Jean Paul Gaultier's womenswear show at Paris Fashion Week.

Gaultier mashed up high-stepping French cancan with street-wise London punk and his signature horizontal stripes yesterday at the Paris summer haute couture show.

For the wedding dress, the bride was a man - the Bosnian-born and very androgynous Broadmeadows model Pejic, who Gaultier cast as the gun-toting blond femme fatale at his James Bond-themed menswear show last week.

Ditching the usual throbbing techno soundtrack, the ever-innovative French designer had the recorded voice of Catherine Deneuve soberly introduce each couture look by number and technical description.

It was the veteran film star herself - seated in the front row alongside Spanish director Pedro Almodovar - who came up with the idea, Gaultier explained.

Woman tries to trick rival into abortion

An American woman pleaded guilty to assault on Wednesday for tricking her husband's mistress, who was pregnant, into taking an abortion pill.

Kisha Jones, of New York, faces up to four years in jail for trying to forcibly abort the fetus of Monique Hunter, who was having an affair with Jones' husband Anthony in 2009, her defense attorney Barry Turner said.

Jones, 40, telephoned Hunter pretending to be calling from her doctor's office and told the woman she needed to take a pill called Cytocec. Jones faked a prescription and sent it to a local pharmacy, the attorney said.

Hunter took the pill, which induced early labor but did not trigger an abortion, he said.

The baby was born prematurely but is in good health, he said.

Jones, who is still married to her husband, also was pregnant when she learned that her husband's mistress was pregnant too, said her attorney.

"My client was crazed over this whole thing," Turner said. "Around the 27th week of her pregnancy, she basically lost it and got Monique Hunter to take an abortion pill."

She is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 10 in Brooklyn Criminal Court.
