Boy, 8, dies while playing on obstacle course

Authorities say an 8-year-old Jacksonville boy died after a rope swing wrapped around his neck as he played on an obstacle course while his brother practiced football nearby.

The Florida Times-Union reports Ryan Perry's little sister found him on the ground about 5:40 p.m. Wednesday at The Bolles School's Bartram Road campus. Their father was nearby watching their older brother's football practice.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Shawn Coarsey says the little girl first thought her brother was clowning around. She tickled him, but got no response.

The newspaper reports a couple of doctors who were among the parents watching football practice rushed over to help the child. He was already dead.

An investigation is continuing.
