Closest brush with Earth: 1.7miles long huge asteroid to whiz past tonight

Published

May 31, 2013 Friday was the day astronomers were keeping a close watch on.

An Asteroid more than 1.7 miles long will whiz by Earth today at 4:59 p.m. EDT, according to media reports.

The big rock - named Asteroid 1998 QE2 - will make its closest approach later tonight.

However, there’s nothing to worry as it will still be 3.6million miles away.

Nasa scientist Paul Chodas (Ch'OH'duhs) said it's one of the larger asteroids to swing by Earth and is the size of the space rock that wiped out the dinosaurs, reported Indiatoday.com.

Astronomers are geared up to capture high-resolution images of the phenomenon to study the rocks future impact on Earth.
