Molly the dog has plenty of mouths to feed with three newborn puppies - and her owner's four kittens.

Elbert Bristow of Columbia said the dog began nursing the six-week-old kittens last week after their mother died. The 84-year-old owner accidentally ran over the mother cat, called Kitty Kitty, when he returned home from a fishing trip.

The Dothan Eagle reports Molly took over as the kittens' adopted parent almost immediately. They follow the dog around Bristow's driveway as if it was their real mother.

"Normally they stay with her five or 10 minutes. She lays down and lets them eat," Bristow said. "It is unusual, very unusual. Really they're natural enemies. Most dogs can't stand cats."

Fortunately for the orphaned kittens, Molly has plenty of milk because her puppies were born a day before they were. Bristow is keeping the kittens and puppies separated on different parts of his property while they're nursing.

He plans to give away all but one of the cats and puppies.

Bristow said he's still stunned by the odd pet parenthood scenario.

"I've had dogs all my life" he said. "I've trained bird dogs and coon dogs, but this is the first time I've ever had a dog take a litter of kittens."
