Colombo: The Kennel Division of Sri Lankan Police on Monday conducted a lavish wedding ceremony - a first-of-its-kind in the country - for its dogs.

According to local media reports, the couple were later sent to the picturesque hill city of Nuwara Eliya for honeymoon.

The ceremony was held in the presence of Senior DIG HNB Ambanwala while a dog show was on display.

This initiative was introduced with a aim to save foreign exchange of around Rs20 million [0.5m] on importing dogs of high pedigree from Germany and France.

The main aim of the wedding is to breed police (official) dogs and the breeding process will come under the supervision of veterinary experts and officers in charge of official police canine.

Twenty dogs including German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Labradors and Doberman took part in the wedding ceremony.

Meanwhile, ‘Colombo Gazette’ reported that police apologised to Sinhala Ravaya (Sinhalese Voice) for conducting the dog wedding according to Sinhalese rituals - the traditional way humans are married.
