An Indian court has ordered a laughter group to stop laughing so loudly, after a neighbour complained of suffering "mental agony."

Since the order came following a hearing last week, members of the laughter group in a densely packed suburb of India's financial capital of Mumbai have been trying to contain their mirth.

The group's president, Sadanand Ghate, says he's tried to explain to police that the group is seeking peace, not disturbing it. But police have ordered the group to make less noise following the June 18 hearing.

Physician Madan Kataria claims to have founded the first laughter yoga club in Mumbai in the mid-1990s, based on the notion that laughter confers physiological and psychological benefits. His website says there are now more than 6,000 laughter clubs worldwide.
