Man divorces wife 5 minutes after marriage

A Saudi man divorced his bride just five minutes after he married her, citing the high dowry imposed by her father on him.

The Moslem scholar who performed the marriage rituals at the groom’s house has just taken the signatures of the couple when the 20-year-old groom asked him to cancel the contract immediately, a newspaper said.

Kabar Arabic language daily said the unnamed groom had been under strong pressure by the father of the 18-year-old bride to agree to pay
SR77,000  (Dh76,000) as dowry (money paid by the groom to the bride’s parents under Islamic law).

“Five minutes after the marriage contract was done, the groom asked the Sheikh to cancel the marriage as guests looked in amazement,” the paper said in a report from the western town of Taif.

“He told the guests that he decided to cancel the marriage because he believed that the dowry was too high…his father tried to dissuade him but he went ahead and divorced the bride.”

Woman swallows 1-inch blade with ice

UK: A woman is terrified that a 1-inch blade that she swallowed with crushed ice by mistake will cut her up internally and she will die due to excessive bleeding.

The blade of an ice crushing unit broke off and mixed with the crushed ice. The woman ingested the ice and the blade, reports The Sun.

After she gulped it, she mouth was full of blood as the blade had managed to slice her throat.

An x-ray revealed that the blade was embedded in her stomach.

Doctors told the mother-of-three that the blade should be allowed to come out of her system naturally.

Meanwhile, she lives in fear.

Mum raised in jungle by monkeys

UK: A mother-of-two kids claims that she was reared by  monkeys in a jungle in Colombia.

She used to catch birds and rabbits to survive in the jungle.

She allegedly spent five years in the wild till hunters found her.

However, they took her to the nearest town and sold her to a brothel in exchange for a parrot, reports The Sun.

However, the woman apparently managed to flee the brothel before she could be forced to entertain a client. She went to Britain where she settled in Bradford.

The woman's daughter told the daily that she brought up her kids in an unusual manner. Whenever they would be hungry as kids, they would have to make noise before she would feed them.

3-year-old patient to pay hospital bill over 42 years

SINGAPORE: For the first time ever, a hospital has agreed that the patient can pay small installments over a long period of time to repay the medical bills incurred.

The three-year-old meningitis patient has run up a whopping $130,000 bill, reports The New Paper.

The little one underwent three operations to relieve the pressure in his skull and had a shunt installed to drain excess water from his brain, said the daily. The child spent 50 days in the hospital.

The child's parents were given a reprieve as they were too poor to make even a partial payment leave alone a full one.

Man asks girl to sell self to bail him out

US: A Billings man is charged with encouraging his girlfriend to prostitute herself to raise his $500 bail in a domestic violence case.

The Billings Gazette reports 32-year-old David Earl Luginbuhl pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of promoting prostitution. District Judge Gregory Todd set his bail at $10,000.

Court records say the girlfriend reported in early March that that Luginbuhl assaulted her, but later recanted and said she did not want to proceed with the case.

As part of the investigation, an officer listened to recorded jail calls between Luginbuhl and his 21-year-old girlfriend and found numerous calls in which he encouraged her to prostitute herself and even discussed prices for various sex acts.

Prosecutors say she had deposited $250 into his jail account by April 22. (AP)

Girl shot after being mistaken for skunk at Halloween party

Police say a costumed 9-year-old girl was accidentally shot outside a western Pennsylvania home during a Halloween party by a relative who thought she was a skunk.

New Sewickley Township police say the girl was over a hillside and wearing a black costume and a black hat with a white tassel. Chief Ronald Leindecker says a male relative mistook her for a skunk and fired a shotgun, hitting her in the shoulder Saturday night.

Leindecker tells the Beaver County Times that the girl was alert and talking when she was flown to a hospital in Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. Her condition was unavailable.

Leindecker says the man hadn't been drinking and he doesn't know whether charges will be filed. (AP)
