The remains of the murdered transgender Mayang Prasetyo is likely to be repatriated to her home country, according to sources in the Indonesian foreign ministry. She was allegedly murdered by her chef boyfriend in Australia last week.

The victim's family hopes to receive her remains in order to perform the last rites in her home country, reports Asia One.

New twist in chef murder-suicide

A former employer of both Mayang Prasetyo and her husband, who allegedly murdered her, has said he 'should have seen it coming'.

Ivan Gneil, who owns Pleasure Dome in Melbourne, said Mayang Prasetyo worked at the parlour for about five years and that her husband had worked there as a male prostitute for around two-and-a-half years.

He said the pair had departed at around the same to work privately.

Mr Gneil told News Corp that he believed Mr Volke forced his wife to leave and enter the illegal sex trade.

He said Mr Volke seemed like a nice guys and was very quiet.

"I knew he had assaulted her. I just thought to myself that if I was wise I could have seen that coming," he said.

7News learned earlier in the week that both her and her killer were known for providing escort services, and each had a website.

The woman's family has asked for consulate assistance to bring her remains back to Indonesia.

Mayang Prasetyo's family and friends have gathered in Bali overnight to pray.

The 27-year-old allegedly died at the hands of Marcus Volke, 28, who took his own life shortly after police found the woman's remains boiling on the stove in their inner-city Brisbane unit.

Ms Mayang, a transgender person, was a sex worker who sent money home to Indonesia, to support her single mother and two younger sisters.

A prayer service was held on Tuesday night in Bali, in the home where she recently lived.

Ms Nining says Ms Mayang sought her blessing before they were married abroad in 2013, and the couple had visited her home in Bandar Lampung, Sumatra, last year.

She was stunned by the crime, believing Volke to be "kind, polite".

Ms Mayang was remembered as the backbone of the family.

She paid for her sisters, aged 18 and 15, to be educated, as well as all of her mother's expenses.

"He was a kind person, cheerful, warm to people, effervescent, always going from here to there," Ms Nining told AAP.

She told tribunnews.com that Ms Mayang adored celebrities, particularly Indonesian soap star-turned-politician Krisna Mukti, and dreamed of becoming "rich and famous".

She had named herself Mayang after Indonesian singer Mayang Sari, and Prasetyo after a previous boyfriend, she told kompas.com.

Until graduating high school in 2005, Ms Nining said her eldest "grew up as a normal boy" before travelling abroad.

One of the sisters, Gebi, told Indonesia's SCTV: "Since he was little, he would usually hang out with girls."

Ms Nining hopes her child's remains can be repatriated for burial in Lampung.

Chef 'cooks' parts of girlfriend's body; slits own throat?

Australian police said Monday they had begun a murder probe after they found human remains in an apartment, but refused to confirm reports that body parts were cooking on the stove.

Authorities went to the home in an upmarket area of Brisbane on Saturday night after neighbours reported a terrible smell.

"Management were concerned about the welfare of some occupants," Detective Inspector Tom Armitt told reporters.

"Upon attendance there, we've had cause to commence an investigation in relation to a murder-suicide."

Police have given few details on the case, but confirmed that human remains were found inside the apartment in Teneriffe and that a man's body was found in a nearby street.

Queensland's Courier-Mail said the dead man was a 28-year-old chef who had worked on cruise ships and had recently moved into the apartment with his Indonesian girlfriend.

Police would not comment on the paper's report that the man slit his own throat after he fled the apartment, or that they had found parts of the woman's body cooking in an industrial pot on the stove.

Forensic officers were at the scene on Monday, with drums used to store medical waste rolled out of the apartment by officers, reports said.
