A Saudi man who had given up hope of medical help to end his agony decided to rely on his own treatment.

When he opened a stitched wound in his leg, he was surprised to see a piece of gauze three months after a surgery.

Mohammed Akban, 43, underwent an operation at a private hospital in Mecca to remove a metal bar that had penetrated his left leg after falling near his house, the Saudi Arabic language daily Okaz reported Tuesday.

Mohammed returned to hospital a week later with much pain and inflammation but he was told by doctors that he should continue taking medicine, it said.

He visited another hospital in the Red Sea port of Jeddah but was again told there was nothing wrong with him.

“He then decided to treat himself with the help of his wife…when he opened the wound at home, he noticed a white object…he pulled it out and realized it was a piece of gauze used by the doctors in Mecca three months ago,” the paper said.

“Mohammed complained to the local health authorities, who decided to set up a committee to investigate the case. The doctors have been barred from leaving the country pending the completion of the investigation.”
