Volleyball-sized snowballs land on Siberian beach

Thousands of giant-sized snowballs have appeared on a beach in Siberia.

The rare event is said to have occurred close to the village of Nyda, just above the Arctic Circle, on the Yamal peninsula.

Locals like Ekaterina Chernykh told the Siberian Times that the first appeared on the beach at the end of October after the water in the Gulf of Ob rose and come into contact with frost.

Ekaterina and others have since been playing and sitting on the balls - which range from tennis ball to volleyball in size - whilst others have to see it with their own eyes to believe it.

A similar event happened on Lake Michigan in 2014 when several balls were washed up near the town of Glenn Arbor.

Boulder-size ice balls can form on the Lake in winter months due to the breaking off of ice sheets. The wind eventually carries these giant balls to the shore.
