A Colorado woman was on Friday sentenced to 100 years in prison for cutting off a baby from a stranger’s womb with a kitchen knife last year.

Thirty-six-year-old Dynel Lane faces maximum penalties for attempted murder and unlawful termination of pregnancy, reported abcnews.

The woman had lost her 19-year-old son in a drowning accident in 2002, which her family claims, may have led her to take such an action. However, the court did not hear the claims.

The court sentenced her to 48 years for attempted murder and 32 years for unlawful termination of pregnancy. The remainder of her sentence was for assault charges in the attack.

Wilkins, the pregnant woman who was lost her unborn child, placed a picture of her dead baby, who appeared to be sleeping, on an easel next to the witness stand, and requested the court to issue the harshest possible sentence.

Meanwhile, Lane’s mother apologised to Wilkins in court.
