Wrong stolen monkey returned to zoo
He may be a stolen monkey, but he's not our stolen monkey, a Sydney wildlife park has admitted.
Actually, he's Brisbane's stolen monkey.
One monkey obviously looks like another, because Simbio Wildlife Park in Helensburgh initially believed a tamarin monkey handed in to them on Saturday was "Rico", stolen from the park in May last year.
Rico was one of eight monkeys taken, but seven of them were found a few weeks later and two men, aged 17 and 18, were charged with stealing them.
On Saturday a 34-year-old Victorian man gave a tamarin monkey to the park.
"The man said a family friend had purchased the monkey over the internet last year," police said yesterday.
"Once he learned it had been stolen he made arrangements for its safe return."
But police said today that the monkey was not Rico.
Further inquiries had revealed that the monkey had actually been stolen from a zoo in Brisbane on October 10 last year, they said.
Rico is still missing, and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
When last seen, Rico was wearing a black and white fur coat. He may be a stolen monkey, but he's not our stolen monkey, a Sydney wildlife park has admitted.
