Residents of a Saudi village visiting a local cemetery were surprised to see part of their dead emerging out of the graves following waves of night attacks by hungry dogs, the Saudi Okaz Arabic language daily reported Saturday.

The dogs had apparently been tempted by the collapse of the old cemetery’s surrounding walls in the Aleida village in the southwestern province of Aseer to make nightly inroads and claw into the graves, it said.

“This cemetery is very old and includes too many graves…it now needs maintenance after it has been attacked by dogs and other animals many times over the past period,” villager Mohammed Al Sanbaqi said.

Okaz quoted a municipal official, Saeed Hadi, as saying authorities had approved SRone million for the reconstruction of the cemetery but added the sum is not enough because of the size of the cemetery and the large number of graves.

The paper said its photographers visited the cemetery and saw “many graves were dug and bones were scattered out of earth.”
