The Department of Environment and Conservation is urging people not to touch turtles they think are injured in dried up lakes.
The department has received a number of calls from the public who have reported seeing sick turtles.
Wildlife Officer Matthew Swan says the recent hot weather and lack of rain has caused several lakes to dry up but most turtles adapt to the conditions by burying themselves and going into a sleeplike state.
He says people should not handle the turtles and if anyone is concerned about a turtle's welfare.
