Bus carrying Taiwanese tourists plunges into river, killing 2; 5 missing

Hundreds of rescuers were searching Saturday for five missing Taiwanese tourists after their bus plunged into a river in southeast China, killing two and injuring 11, state media reported.

The bus carrying 26 people fell into a section of a major river in Fujian province on Friday around noon, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. It said 24 of the passengers were Taiwanese, and 19 had been rescued. A further two were pulled out from the river but died after treatment, it said.

Eleven of the rescued were injured, including three seriously, according to a statement on the website of Zhangzhou city government, which oversees the area.

Xinhua said police were questioning the driver.

Xinhua said more than 700 soldiers, police and rescuers using 50 boats were searching for the missing along with more than 200 residents. The bus fell into the Jiulong River near Shajian township in a rural area of Hua'an county.
