Mother gives birth at border crossing

US Customs and Border Protection officers have helped deliver a baby boy after his mother arrived in labor at a Texas port of entry.

The agency says Ana Suez Rey is a 28-year-old US citizen who lives in the Texas border city of Presidio. She arrived Saturday night at the Presidio port of entry from Mexico and gave birth minutes after arriving.

After officers helped deliver the baby boy, named Derrick, they wrapped him in their jackets until an ambulance arrived. Rey and her son were taken to a hospital in good health.

Port director John Deputy says that while U.S. Custom and Border Protection has a long-standing tradition of welcoming U.S. citizens returning home, it's rare to welcome a new citizen into the world.
