Arsenal starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain believes Arsene Wenger is the man to help him break into the England senior squad having finally achieved his dream of moving to the Emirates.

The £15 million winger who turns 18 next week, now dreams of following in the footsteps of his Saints predecessors Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott by making it into international football.

“To sign for Arsenal is a dream,” Oxlade-Chamberlain was quoted as telling in the ‘Mirror’.

“I know there is a lot of hard work for me to get to the level of the players already at the club, but for me it is going to be fantastic - having watched them week in, week out - to finally have a chance of playing alongside them.

“I want to work hard to make that happen and, hopefully, to make the kind of impact that will help me into the England senior team.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain hit 10 goals in 41 games last season to fire Southampton into the Championship and he made the PFA Team of the Year for League One.

The youngster hopes to reap the maximum benefit by learning the tricks of the trade from Wenger.

“Everybody knows that Mr Wenger is an incredible teacher. I’m just hoping that I can learn from him in the way that so many players have done,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has already played for England at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level.

He said: “I’ve said before that Theo has been amazing since he has gone through the same route as me, from Southampton to Arsenal. When he has played for England, he has been fantastic.

“And people already know that, even though Jack Wilshere is only 19, he is still being looked at by Fabio Capello for the national team.

“I’ve followed Jack over the last few years and what he has achieved under Mr Wenger has been amazing. Obviously, I’m hoping I can experience that same kind of success.”

The ambitious youngster’s signing is seen as a massive coup for Arsenal as he is one of the country’s most promising players and sought after by Wenger who could not hide his delight.

“We are delighted that Alex has decided to join us. He is an exciting young player who will provide us with creativity and offensive quality,” said Wenger.

He added: “Alex is a versatile player. He can play as an attacking centre-midfielder, wide left and right.

“He is a perceptive passer of the ball and has a great understanding of the game and looks to be a very good team player.

“Alex has done extremely well during his development with Southampton and we are looking forward to him progressing even further and fulfilling his huge potential with Arsenal Football Club.”
