Liverpool to make £10m offer for Defoe

Liverpool are feeling the absence of banned Luis Suarez and desperate to beef up their attack during the January transfer window after firing blanks against Stoke for their seventh draw at Anfield.

Kop boss Kenny Dalglish is willing to test Tottenham with a £10 million offer for unsettled England striker Jermain Defoe, according to Mirror Football.

Liverpool’s faltering form has left them struggling to finish in the top four.

The proven scoring record of Defoe would add a new dimension to the Anfield attack – and Liverpool hope to agree a fee with Spurs despite the Londoners’ title ambitions.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp said Defoe is going nowhere and wants a new striker himself and watched Marseille’s Loic Remy on Sunday.

If Redknapp adds a new face, that would push Defoe further down the pecking order and nearer the White Hart Lane exit.

Defoe needs more games to keep his England Euro hopes alive and Dalglish can offer him that on Merseyside.

Dirk Kuyt was the shock choice for the central striker’s role against Stoke in Saturday’s goalless draw, with Andy Carroll and Craig Bellamy on the bench.

Defoe's agent has told Tottenham Hotspur that the striker wants to move in this transfer window because he is not in Redknapp's first team.

Redknapp revealed that chairman Daniel Levy has been contacted by Defoe's representative to discuss the future of the England international.

"Daniel spoke to his agent who said he is not happy because he wants to play and he has got a few clubs in for him," Redknapp said. "I am sure he has got a few clubs in for him but we are not selling him. He is saying this club wants him and that club wants him – that is how they make their money. He is not moving anywhere, though. He is on contract here and is a big player for us."

Regarding Defoe's prospects of being selected for Euro 2012 by Fabio Capello if he is not in the Spurs starting XI, Redknapp said: "Jermain wants to play in the Euros but so does Rafa (van der Vaart). He wants to play for Holland so he feels he has to play. I would not consider letting him out on loan."

The 29-year-old has started just seven Premier League matches this term, after slipping behind Emmanuel Adebayor in Redknapp's plans.

Defoe's place in the England squad is under threat from rising stars like Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge and Manchester United's Danny Welbeck, and he wants more chances to impress Fabio Capello and add to his total of seven league goals for the campaign.

Redknapp has no intention of allowing the ex-West Ham and Portsmouth forward to leave White Hart Lane, but confirmed he had spoken to the player's agent.
