As rampaging wingbacks go, Manchester United has been late catching up on the likes of Ashley Cole and Glenn Johnson.

Patrice Evra has shown the way and now Rafael, and even Fabio on loan, are gunning down the flanks to usher in a new generation of wingbacks at Old Trafford.

The coming of Alex Buttner has raised the bar as well.

However, a look in to the United youth ranks reveals that wingbacks are a key to the future for the Red Devils.

Top of the young lot is Marnick Vermijl who has already debuted for United in the League Cup this season.

Speaking to MUTV Vermijl picks Paul Scholes as his inspiration, and Ryan Giggs, when he was young.

No trying to get ahead of himself Vermijl says he just plans to take it step by step trying to get in the first team. “Then we'll see.”

“I was four-years old for my first competitive game. It was in my home town for a little club. Normally, I wasn't supposed to play until five because of regulations but they said, "Yeah, go on and just do it."

“I was playing for two years at Standard Liege and then Warren Joyce and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came to watch me at a tournament in Holland. From there, I needed to come here and do some tests and I was alright.”

His biggest strength? “My pace going forward. I just enjoy myself when I can go forward.”

Here comes another wingback.
