Man Utd’s Chicharito gives Fergie sell Rooney option

On a day when Jaap Stam raised the spectre of Sir Alex Ferguson’s ruthlessness when dealing with players who can draw offers too good to refuse, one can only believe Old Trafford will not become the Emirates.

If Manchester United was indeed Arsenal, one might not put it past Wenger to consider sumptuous bids for Wayne Rooney… and then, cash in.

After all, Javier Hernandez has raised his profile to the starting XI with his relentless goalscoring.

Robin Van Persie is still red hot.

And Shinji Kagawa has yet to come back from injury. This gives Danny Welbeck plenty of time to get his goal-scoring boots on and if this was indeed Arsenal, that has all the makings of a continuation bet – sell Rooney, make a profit, hope for the best.

That United are not Arsenal stems as much from the trophy cabinet as from the fact that Fergie decides when to let players go, not the players.

From David Beckham and Roy Keane, to even the high and mighty Cristiano Ronaldo having to wait an extra season at OT before the Real Madrid switch, Fergie makes the call.

At Arsenal, the players have so far made the calls – Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas and van Persie, the loudest.

Now Javier Hernandez, Manchester United’s October has opened the door for Fergie to consider cashing in on Rooney.

When Chicharito was asked about Sir Alex Ferguson setting a 20-goal target for the campaign he said, "I never have a target," he asserted. "I never do that. The only target here is to play a lot of games to help my team and with my professional aims to do my business on and off the pitch."

Chicharito looks likely to hit that target a lot earlier than Rooney.

Clubs from PSG to Madrid will be eager to take Rooney away from Old Trafford and should an offer that Fergie cannot refuse be tabled, who knows.

Rooney can go. Now, is Fergie going to do a Wenger?
