Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo or bus? Not quite for Manchester United.

It has always been about those attacking full-backs and with Rafael showing tremendous growth and maturity in the last season, and Patrice Evra not getting any younger, Manchester United have now sign Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela.

The youngster, who will fly to Turkey to represent Uruguay at the World Under-20 Championships later this month on June 21, is touted as the next Roberto Carlos.

He has silky skills, tremendous pace, is strong and can strike the ball.

David Moyes could not have picked a better future prospect – even if he did not really pick this one.

According to the club’s website, Varela, who was born in Montevideo on 24 March 1993, is an ambitious full-back who plays on the right flank.

Guillermo after completing his a trial at Carrington was quote by South American radio station Tirando Paredes as saying: “I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test myself with Manchester United. I'm glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel. I was treated so well and Chicharito helped me a lot.”

After signing the deal, he added: “I’m very lucky there are quite a few Spanish-speakers here.

“It will certainly help me settle in.”
