Paris Saint-Germain coach Antoine Kombouare on Saturday refused to comment on reports linking his big-spending club with an imminent move for David Beckham.
A report in Saturday’s edition of the L’Equipe sport daily claimed the 36-year-old English midfielder is on the verge of agreeing a deal with the French side, who sat top of Ligue 1 ahead of this weekend’s matches.
However, Kombouare refused to fan the flames when asked about the likelihood of a deal being completed.
“What interests me is what’s happening now: the match tomorrow (Sunday) against Ajaccio,” said the PSG coach at a press conference.
“I never spoke about the other signings and I definitely won’t change the way I talk.
“My worries are about whether we’ll be as good without (Diego) Lugano, without (Jeremy) Menez, without (Blaise) Matuidi (all suspended), and how the players coming back from injury will do.”
PSG spent in excess of 80 million euros ($111m) on new recruits in the summer and there was speculation that Kombouare would be replaced by a more glamorous alternative.
As a result, the former Valenciennes manager says he does not look too far ahead when he thinks about his future at Parc des Princes.
“At the start of the season, I wasn’t supposed to be here,” he said.
“It was complicated, so I obviously had to take things match by match. The more matches we win, the stronger my position is and the team can also increase their lead over their rivals.
“What interests is me is the players who I’m working with today. Full stop.”
PSG sporting director Leonardo, who worked with Beckham at AC Milan, says “the door is open” for the former England captain to join the club.
Beckham’s contract with Los Angeles Galaxy expires in November.
