Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is a major doubt for Saturday's FA Cup fourth round tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

The England forward has not managed to train all week after picking up knocks to his knee and ankle in last weekend's hard-fought 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates.

Rooney's absence would prove a blow to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who already has a lengthy injury list to contend with.

Phil Jones and Portuguese winger Nani both had to leave the Emirates pitch with ankle injuries and will not feature at Anfield, while Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Young, Anderson and Michael Owen remain sidelined.

Rooney's problem is not expected to rule him out of action in the long-term.

United have struggled with injuries all season: Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley are both thought to be at least a week away from returning, Anderson is sidelined for a fortnight and Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic are out for the season.
