Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has denied making an approach for Marseille winger Andre Ayew during the summer transfer window.

Reports in France suggested Wenger had considered an offer for the Ghana international, who was OM’s player of the season in 2010-11, but Wenger said his squad was already sufficiently strong in the areas where the 21-year-old plays.

“I like the player but I made no approach for him,” said Wenger, whose side will come up against Ayew in the Champions League on Wednesday.

“We’re well covered on the flanks, with (Andrey) Arshavin, Gervinho and Theo Walcott, as well as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, a young English player who is very talented.”

Wenger also expressed his delight at Thomas Vermaelen’s decision to sign a new long-term contract and said he hoped it would put an end to speculation about Arsenal’s need for reinforcements at centre-back.

“I’m delighted, although it was expected,” said the Frenchman.

“It’s good news for us. It should stop the speculation about the centre-back positions. We have five centre-backs now. That should be enough. We won’t be in the market in January.”
