As Muslims around the world observe the month of Ramadan, Twitter and Periscope have introduced new hashtag emojis to commemorate the fasting period.

When social media users on Twitter use the hashtags #Ramadan, along with its variations in English, #Ramazan, #Ramadhan, will see the emoji of the crescent moon with the holy mosque.

Those tweeting in the Arabic script will also see the newly introduced hashtag emojis.

Although, this is not limited to the Middle East alone, with the Malaysian and Indonesian greeting for Ramadan such as #BulanPuasa, #BukanPuasa and #Puasa will also see the Ramadan emoji appear, along with #Sahur.

Similarly, Twitter Mena’s official account has also tweeted that users or Periscope will also witness their own set of hashtag emojis, saying: “You can add the following tags to live broadcast address @Periscopeco, and when you press on the screen will appearance of the Ramadan Crescent, including hearts.”

Aside from the Arabic script and the South East Asian Ramadan greetings, other words that will show up the hashtag emoji includes #Azan, #Azaan, #Iftar, #Iftaari, #Namaz, #RamadanKareem, among others.

This is not the first time social media platforms such as Twitter have introduced hashtag emojis, which introduced icons in 2014 to commemorate Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr and has been introducing them to mark special events.

For the currently ongoing Copa America, Twitter has launched hashtag-triggered emojis for the official event hashtags: #CA2016 and #CopaAmerica.

There are also Twitter emojis for #RedCard and #YellowCard.
