India beats New Zealand by 40 runs in 1st 1-dayer

Virat Kohli struck a sparkling century Sunday to help India secure a 40-run victory over New Zealand in the first limited-overs international.

Kohli's knock of 105 came with the help of 10 fours off 104 balls and made up for a lack of big contributions from other batsmen. India mustered a fighting total of 276 after being asked to bat first at the Nehru Stadium.

New Zealand could only manage 236 in reply after a strong display by the Indian bowlers in the first of a five-match series. Jaipur, Baroda, Bangalore and Chennai will host the remaining matches.

India had won the preceding three-match test series 1-0.
