IPL6: Chennai crush Punjab in battle of Kings

A masterclass by retired Australian great Michael Hussey (86 not out) and a composed unbeaten half century by Murali Vijay (50) saw Chennai Super Kings record their first win in IPL.

After bowling out Kings XI Punjab for 138, the visitors coasted home with nearly three overs to spare.

Hussey smashed two sixes and 11 boundaries during his 54-ball 86 as Chennai reached 139 for no loss in 17.2 overs.

Vijay was content to play second fiddle to his more illustrious partner pacing his innings beautifully hitting a six and three boundaries during his run-a-ball 50.

The only blemish in Hussey's dominant knock was when Chawla floored a return catch.

Earlier, KXIP put into bat collapsed in a heap despite cruising at 106-3 after 14 overs.

After a brisk start, they lost both openers Gilchrist and Mandeep Singh in quick succession in the third over.

Vohra also departed after a breezy 16 off 11 balls having hit three boundaries.

David Hussey (41) and Gurkeerat Singh (31) resuscitated the innings with a 56-run stand for the fourth wicket.

But their innings crumbled thereafter losing their last seven wickets for 27 runs within six overs.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS INNINGS

Hussey sent Kumar sailing over midwicket followed by a single to hit the winning runs.

Chennai are 131 for no loss after 17 overs.

Vijay completes his seventh IPL fifty with a single complimenting Hussey well.

Punjab are maintaining a healthy run rate despite the loss of openers with Hussey picking a couple of boundaries off Nannes and Morris.

CSK smarting from the opening round defeat at the hands Mumbai Indians are likely to come out firing on all cylinders.

The MS Dhoni-led CSK who have reigned twice in the IPL will be keen to get on the points table.

KXIP, on the other are in a buoyant mood, having registered a convincing eight-wicket victory in their season opener against Pune Warriors India.

It was a particularly good match for the 19-year old Manan Vohra who impressed with his temperament and strokeplay, scoring 43 not out.

Apart from Vohra, Gurkeerat Singh took an amazing acrobatic catch to dismiss Ross Taylor.

KXIP will be heartened by the performance of veterans Adam Gilchrist who showed he has not lost his magic touch while Azhar Mahmood made a useful contribution with the ball.

It all points to a humdinger of a game at Mohali.
