Royal Challengers Bangalore surged to the top of the table in IPL6 powered by Chris Gayle's record-breaking century.

Chasing a mammoth target of 264, Pune made 133 for nine with Steve Smith (41) and Mitchell Marsh (25) offering some resistance after they had stumbled to 42 for four.

Rampaul, Unadkat and Gayle took two wickets apiece.

But the day belonged to Gayle who hit an astonishing 175 not out off 66 balls with 17 sixes and 13 fours.

He smashed the fastest century off just 30 balls in any format of cricket eclipsing Andrew Symond's 34-ball effort.

The gangly West Indian southpaw littered the ground with some stupendous shots all around the wicket, with the ball disappearing over the stadium at least on three occasions.

He entertained the crowd with his blistering strokeplay making 127 during a IPL record opening stand of 167 with Dilshan (33).

Gayle also surpassed the highest individual T20 score of 158 made by Brendon McCullum while Bangalore's total of 263 eclipsed the previous highest team total of 260 set by Sri Lanka.

Having been put into bat, their innings was interrupted by rain at 11 for no loss after Gayle has cracked a couple of boundaries.

But no one expected the storm that unfolded after resumption as Gayle battered the ball out of sight all around the stadium and over it several times.

Records tumbled as Gayle smashed the fastest century off 30 balls, the most number of 17 sixes in an innings and surpassed the highest T20 score of Brendon McCullum (158) in the process during his hurricane knock.

"It was one of those days. I was hitting the ball really well and from the middle of it. I decided to slow it down in the middle overs," said Gayle after his magnificent knock.

It was a brutal display of power hitting by the West Indian who sent the ball sailing almost effortlessly over the ropes without actually bludgeoning it.

AB de Villiers smashed an eight-ball 38 with three sixes and three boundaries as RCB eclipsed the previous highest IPL total of 246-5 made by Chennai Super Kings in 2010.

Dinda claimed two for 48, Wright one for 26 and Kumar bowled economically conceding 23 for none in his four overs.

Finch was the most expensive with his one over going for 29, Murtaza's two overs cost 45, Pandey went for 33 from two while Marsh claimed one for 56 from three overs.
