Pakistan made 236-7 in 48.4 overs chasing a target of 235 to win the fourth one-day international against South Africa and level the five-match series 2-2 at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday.

Pakistan chased down South Africa's total of 234 for nine to win a thrilling run-chase with eight balls to spare set up a series decider in the final match in Benoni on Sunday.

Pakistan were cruising along at 186 for three when a double strike by left arm spinner Robin Peterson threatened to derail their run chase.

A record-breaking stand of 153 for the fourth wicket between Imran Farhat (93) and Misbah ul Haq (80) lifted Pakistan after they slumped to 33 for three by the 11th over.

The early wickets included that of Mohammad Hafeez, who was given out for obstructing the field in the second over.

Misbah and Farhat started their stand slowly, with the fifty partnership taking 82 balls, but they picked up the pace, helped by the introduction into the South African attack of part-time leg-spinner Ingram, whose first over in international cricket cost 17 runs, including two sixes and a four by Misbah.

They had been together for 187 balls when Misbah, who has yet to hit a century in 113 innings, holed out to deep mid-wicket when 49 runs were still required.Share your views.

In a bizarre dismissal Mohammad Hafeez was declared out for having obstructed the field when his body blocked a throw by South Africa wicketkeeper AB de Villiers as the batsman ran to the non-striker's end for a second run.

Hafeez was judged to have changed the course of his run to prevent a run out and was given out according to a rule introduced by the International Cricket Council in 2011.

Hafeez, yet to score, angrily ripped off his gloves when the decision was made by TV umpire Billy Bowden after an appeal by the South Africans.

Previously, batsmen were allowed to change their course as they ran between ends to put themselves between a throw and the stumps, but that was outlawed two years ago.

The opener was the first batsman in international cricket to be dismissed under the new rule and just the fifth in the history of Test and one-day internationals to be given out under the general obstructing the field law.

England's Len Hutton was out obstructing the field during a Test against South Africa in 1951, still the only Test cricketer to be dismissed in that way.

Two other Pakistan players, Rameez Raja and Inzamam-ul-Haq, and India's Mohinder Amarnath are the only other players to go for obstructing the field in ODIs.

The last before Hafeez on Thursday was Inzamam in 2006 when he used his bat to block a throw from India fielder Suresh Raina while standing out of his crease.

Kamran Akmal fell to a brilliant catch by Miller off Tsotsobe while Younis Khan was bowled by Kleinveldt.

Farhat dropped anchor with his second boundary coming after nearly 18 overs as he repaired the damage with his skipper Misbah who opened out by blasting a couple of sixes and a boundary off Colin Ingram.

Misbah raced to his half century stepping up the tempo of the innings before holing out to Behardien off Peterson in the 42nd over.

Peterson struck again four balls later when Afridi edged behind after having a smashed a boundary off the first ball he faced.

Farhat, who gave a couple of half chances during his knock, ensured Pakistan would cross the line though he was dismissed with Pakistan nine short of after Behardien took a brilliant catch as the left hander tried to force Steyn over extra cover.

There was a minor hiccup when Riaz was run out for a duck but Saeed Ajmal hit a boundary off the first ball he faced from Tsotsobe while Shoaib Malik who remained unbeaten on 19 hit a couple of boundaries, including the winning hit, off the same over.

"Of course, a much-needed victory," said Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq who was adjudged man of the Match.

"Everybody put their 100 per cent in, it was a team effort. Farhat batted really well. We need one batsman to stay till the end, he showed that responsibility. That start was something we need and are capable of, especially getting Amla, you dream of that start wherever we get a little bit of turn and bounce, Ajmal is the key man. The seamers bowled really well too. It was like we were playing in Lahore, thanks to the crowd," he added.

"Two quality sides," said South African captain AB de Villiers. "Unfortunately we lost the momentum too many times today. I got out at a bad time. We fought till the end, but unfortunately we came out short. We showed character with the bat, but didn't put the pressure on for long enough. Pakistan just outplayed us in certain areas."

Earlier, Pakistan's fast bowlers struck early and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal ended a promising fightback by South Africa.

South Africa struggled to 234 for nine in their 50 overs, despite a fourth wicket stand of 115 between captain AB de Villiers (75) and David Miller (67).

South Africa's troubles started early when left-armer Mohammad Irfan took wickets with the first two balls of the match. He had Hashim Amla caught behind, then bowled Colin Ingram with a yorker.

Fellow left-armer Junaid Khan followed up with the wickets of Graeme Smith and Farhaan Behardien as South Africa slumped to 38 for four after winning the toss.

De Villiers and Miller gave the home side hope of making a good total before Miller missed a sweep against Ajmal and was out after a career-best innings.

Miller's 67 was scored off 77 balls and he hit seven fours.

His dismissal came nine balls before the batting power play and South Africa's hopes plummeted when De Villiers was caught behind when he was adjudged to have gloved a sweep against Ajmal after making 75 off 108 balls with five fours.

The off-spinner had Ryan McLaren caught in the deep as the power play yielded just 17 runs for the loss of two wickets.

Ajmal took three for 42 in ten overs, while Irfan claimed three for 46 in nine and Junaid took three for 45 in nine.
