Rory McLaren also claimed three for 19 from seven overs as South Africa strangled Pakistan during the run chase.

Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq did not rue his decision to put South Africa into bat first.

"The way the ball was moving, 270-280 would have been a par score. The way it was seaming in the start with the little bit of moisture, we should have exploited the conditions better. They kept the wickets for the first 10-15 overs, which was the key," said Misbah.

South African one-day captain AB de Villiers was pleased with their day's work.

"Very proud of the boys. Really excites me to see the boys perform like that. The Pakistan bowlers bowled really well up front. That opening partnership freed the middle order up. Colin played a great game, congrats to that," said de Villiers.

South Africa's match winning total revolved round Colin Ingram's unbeaten century, featuring in a 120-run partnership for the third wicket with Amla (43).

Ingram finished with 105 off 104 balls as he and Farhaan Behardien battered the bowlers in a sparkling 50-run unbeaten partnership at the end of the innings.

Man of the match Colin Ingram said he enjoyed and was glad to contribute to the victory.

"Just enjoyed batting with some of the other guys, who helped me along the way. AB looked like he had his game together, I fed off that, and we ran well. Magic knock from Farhaan," said Ingram.

Behardien's swashbuckling 34 off 14 balls threatened to steal the limelight and deny Ingram the strike and a chance to reach his ton as the innings neared a close.

But the 27-year-old Ingram drove the first ball of the last over away for a four to bring up his third one day century, hitting it between mid-off and cover to the delight of the fans.

Ingram and captain AB de Villiers put together a 120-run partnership for the third wicket after Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla had laid a decent foundation but then got out in quick succession.

De Villiers was caught for 65 trying to go over extra cover off Saeed Ajmal, who took two of the wickets.

Smith was caught behind off his gloves for 30 and Amla top edged to deep square leg for 43 as all the South African batsmen got among the runs.
